This story, in a nutshell, teaches the reader that in order to be a doctor, one must be, to a point, sadistic. In order to cure various diseases and ailments, doctors must, from time to time, cut open patients. No average person could, without various degrees of counseling, handle the psychological effects of slicing open another human being and then proceed to potentially remove essential organs to their survival, but doctors do. The story goes on to show just one incident in which a doctor is required to use force in order to potentially save another person’s life.

The problems which I encountered while writing my position paper dealt less with the fundamentals of the assignment and concentrated on the format. I ran into difficulties finalizing the format in which I would attempt to complete this assignment: a narrative. The format which I decided upon was chosen in attempts to help refine my creative genius however, I was met with a few big obstacles. The biggest obstacle was simply trying to assimilate Carroll’s mastery of language, not to mention recreating memorable dialogue amongst the characters whilst still adhering to conveying particular lessons. The next obstacle which I found myself staring down was the notion of incorporating research into my paper — as adding academic quotations to a narrative goes somewhat against the grain, but this was alleviated through the utilization of footnotes.

We were introduced this semester to three pieces of work by Kate Chopin, The Storm, The Story of an Hour, and Desiree’s Baby. Throughout the three stories, Chopin focused on one underlying concept: ignorance is bliss. Chopin makes a bold statement through her attempts to make the reader understand that as long as your spouse is unaware of infidelity, resentment, or simply heritage that it can clearly work out for the best. In the Storm, Chopin makes a point to attempt to make the reader get lost in lust, similarly to the characters in the story. The Story of An Hour is riddled with subtle hints towards resentment concerning Louise’s husband. And lastly, in Desiree’s Baby, the author tries painting a picture for the audience in which feels sorry for not only Desiree, but her racist husband, as well.

I’m tired of having to explain to everyone why I got the verse that I did, so I’m going to address it now. My tattoo is of a verse from the Rolling Stones song, Salt of The Earth, which is on the Beggar’s Banquet album. My tattoo says:

“Say a prayer

For the common footsoldier

Spare a thought

For his back breaking work

Say a prayer

For his wife and his children

Who burn the fires

And who still till the earth.”

For those of you who might have thought that this is some tribute to the military, you’re wrong; for those of you who might have thought this is some tribute to the hardworking people who, regardless of the hours spent working, can’t make ends meet, you’re right. A tribute to the soldiers, farmers, officers, teachers, cashiers, assistants, receptionists, and to anyone that works their hands to the bone to make for certain the world continues spinning. Without the sweat and blood of these individuals, society would simply crumble. I know this to be true because these are the jobs which I hope to avoid through completing college.

“Let’s all drink to the salt of the earth!”

Maybe I’m just a skeptic or simply cynical, but anything that anyone says has a persuasive purpose to it. For instance, when meeting someone for the first time, how are you to know that the name they present to you is in fact their true name? When that unknown person presents to you their name, you can either chose to believe their claim or disregard it. My example might very well be silly and seemingly irrelevant, but it happens more often than you’d might imagine.

Personally, I’m more skeptical of colors than names, although names are, at the end of the day, arbitrary, I can understand the skepticism when it comes to names. But colors, they’re a pain in the ass; I’m partially color-blind which I relate to dyslexia with colors and as a result, I find myself questioning not only my own perception of a particular color, but others’ as well. An example of this is the sun — what color is it? Is it yellow as we have been conditioned to believe? I don’t believe that it is, I believe that it is in fact white, and the reason that I think this way is because when objects and creatures were being assigned colors, those of whom were doing the assigning asked themselves “what is the brightest color we have?” And after much speculation and debate, those men and women decided it was yellow. While yes, this again might be somewhat silly of a concept for some to appreciate or even understand, but just by stating what you believe to be an obvious, natural truth another person might believe it to be nothing but a lie, or in some cases logically irrelevant (What the Tortoise Said to Achilles by Lewis Carroll). This brings me back to my principle concept: everything communicated from one being to another is in essence persuasive.

Teachers, professors, tutors, etc. alike all preach to their pupils the importance of a fully developed thought while condemning last-minute attempts at papers. Well, to them I must say “practice what you preach.” You expect us to work diligently if not passionately on essays which bare no direction nor destination and produce a well written, refined essay which is supposed to sway a particular audience toward one school of thought pertaining to the subject. From now on, when given this assignment, why not rebel and convince your teacher that you aren’t who you claim to be?

While I’m finding that my peers have seldom read “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” or “Through The Looking Glass,” at least they are well acquainted with the Disney film. And while the film did a decent job of introducing young children to the nonsensical world that Lewis Carroll created for the Lindell children, it does not do justice to that world. It’s unfortunate that, in our society today, we resort to watching movies based upon great works of literature, which conversely are squished and skewed in order to fit the time-frame that the movie industry has deemed appropriate for the literature. Through said manipulation of the literature, the audience is often deprived of such memorable events and literary devices. For instance, in Through the Looking Glass, which slices are cut from and then intertwined among chapters of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in no particular order, there is a scene in which Alice meets Humpty Dumpty and is introduced to the notion that because names have no rhyme or reason in regards of a descriptor, that they are indeed arbitrary. Individuals that have relied on movie companies such as Disney or Pixar to translate all those “icky printed words” (as my two-year old niece refers to them) into pretty pictures and spoken dialogue is just lazy and disrespectful; disrespectful to those who wrote these works of literary genius whom had given to the world new points of view, moral and ethical dilemmas, hope and comfort while stimulating intellectual growth. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland deals with playing cards, as is depicted by the Disney film, but contratriwise (read the books, you’ll get the reference), Through the Looking Glass revolves around a game of chess; in fact, if you follow the moves made by each of the characters in the book, you will find that in eleven turns the white pawn (Alice) will win the game for the White side.

“He is…fragmented, critical, and unable to communicate. He is therefore unable to keep a companion for very long,” Hollis explains why Prufrock hesitates acting upon his desires of propositioning the unnamed female for sex (672). Hollis, through pointing out the fact that Prufrock dwells on his physical shortcommings, proves that Prufrock’s self-doubt and contradiction. Prufrock is, like many people, lacking confidence and constantly scrutanizes his own shortcomings. Regardless of the fact that Prufrock knows his need for a lady companion in order to escape being “lonely men in shirt-sleeves, leaning out the windows” (Eliot, l. 72).

After having read the two essays by Walcutt and Hayman, I believe that Prufrock was propositioning the unnamed female character for sex rather than a marriage proposal because I find that Hayman provides more detail and support while also giving the reader more to speculate on. I agree with Hayman’s judgement that Prufrock was indeed propositioning sex from the unnamed female character for a number of reasons: she remains unnamed throughout the entire poem, Prufrock obviously knows and cares to know very little about her, and the fact that the female character were left one-dimensional without any sort of history, personality or distinguishable features. Another reason that I subscribe to the same school of thought as Hayman is because the concept of promiscuity is not new and has been apart of society since civilization began. Hurray for hookers.
